How to Protect Your DFW Home During Storm Season
The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex sits in one of the most storm-prone regions in the United States. Severe thunderstorms, large hail, tornadoes, and straight-line winds are a regular part of life in North Texas — and they can cause devastating property damage in minutes.Being prepared before a storm hits is the best way to minimize damage and protect your family. Here's Irvin Restoration's complete storm preparation guide for DFW homeowners.
Before Storm Season — Annual Prep
Have your roof professionally inspected every spring before storm season. Replace damaged or missing shingles immediately. Clean gutters and downspouts. Trim trees and branches that overhang your roof. Inspect and reseal windows and doors. These simple steps significantly reduce storm damage risk.
When a Storm Warning Is Issued
When severe weather is forecast for your area bring all outdoor furniture, decorations, and loose items inside. Close and lock all windows and doors. Park vehicles in the garage if possible — hail can total a car quickly. Charge your phone and have flashlights and emergency supplies ready.
Protecting Against Hail Damage
DFW experiences some of the largest and most frequent hailstorms in the country. Impact-resistant roofing materials can significantly reduce hail damage — ask your insurance agent about discounts for impact-resistant shingles. If large hail is forecast consider moving vehicles into a garage or covered parking.
Tornado Preparedness
Know your safe room before a tornado warning is issued — an interior room on the lowest floor of your home away from windows. Have a weather radio or emergency alert app on your phone. If a tornado warning is issued for your area go to your safe room immediately and stay there until the all-clear is given.
After the Storm — What to Do First
Once the storm passes and it's safe to go outside inspect your property for visible damage. Take photos of everything before making any temporary repairs. Call Irvin Restoration at (214) 505-1111 for emergency board-up and roof tarping if needed. Then call your insurance company to report the damage.
Signs of Hidden Storm Damage
Not all storm damage is immediately visible. Check for missing or damaged shingles, dents in gutters and downspouts, cracked or broken windows, damage to HVAC units, and water stains on ceilings inside. Hail damage to roofing is often only visible from the roof itself — call us for a free post-storm inspection.
