Signs You Have Mold in Your Home — What DFW Homeowners Need to Know

Mold is more common in North Texas homes than most homeowners realize — and more dangerous. DFW's hot, humid summers create ideal conditions for mold growth, especially after any water damage event. The problem is that mold often grows in hidden areas for weeks or months before becoming visible.Knowing the warning signs of mold can help you catch it early — before it spreads and before it affects your family's health. With over 20 years of mold remediation experience in Irving and the DFW metroplex, here's what Irvin Restoration wants every homeowner to know.

Sign 1 — Visible Dark Spots on Walls or Ceilings

The most obvious sign of mold is visible growth — dark spots that appear black, green, brown, or white on walls, ceilings, or floors. Mold commonly appears in bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and any area that has experienced moisture. If you see spots that won't clean away with regular household cleaners you likely have a mold problem.

Sign 2 — Persistent Musty or Earthy Smell

A musty, earthy, or damp odor that doesn't go away — even in rooms that look clean — is one of the most reliable indicators of hidden mold. Mold growing inside walls, under flooring, or in HVAC systems produces this distinctive smell long before it becomes visible. If your home has an unexplained persistent odor call us for an inspection.

Sign 3 — Unexplained Health Symptoms

If family members are experiencing unexplained respiratory symptoms, chronic coughing, frequent headaches, skin irritation, or fatigue that improves when they leave the house — mold exposure could be the cause. Children, elderly people, and those with asthma or allergies are particularly vulnerable to mold-related health effects.

Sign 4 — Recent Water Damage That Wasn't Fully Dried

Any water damage event that wasn't professionally dried within 24-48 hours is a significant mold risk. This includes burst pipes, appliance leaks, roof leaks, and flooding. Household fans don't dry the inside of walls, subfloors, and insulation where mold takes hold. If you've had water damage that wasn't professionally dried call us for a mold inspection.

Sign 5 — Peeling or Bubbling Paint or Wallpaper

Paint or wallpaper that is peeling, bubbling, or separating from the wall without an obvious cause is often a sign of moisture trapped behind the surface — which creates ideal conditions for mold growth. Don't just repaint over it — have the moisture source identified and the area inspected for mold first.

Sign 6 — Warped or Buckling Floors

Wood floors that are warping, buckling, or have soft spots often indicate moisture intrusion from below — either from a subfloor leak, foundation moisture, or flooding. This moisture creates perfect conditions for mold to grow underneath the flooring where you can't see it.

Sign 7 — Rust or Water Stains

Water stains on ceilings or walls — even old, dry stains — indicate that water has been present in that area. Anywhere water has been there is potential for mold growth, even if the stain appears dry now. Old water stains should always be investigated to ensure mold isn't present behind the surface.
